New York Fashion Week Diary - A/W'13

By Linah Hashmi

For the fashion crowd in New York the show did go on come what may, even a furious snowstorm..braving past it with chauffeurs carrying the women in their high heeled Louboutin boots over the ice into their mercedez-benz, (oh the drama), and after some 80 plus shows, NYFW, the busiest of all fashion weeks couldn’t have come to a more glamorous end with Ralph Lauren‘s romantic russian fairy-tale! You couldn’t help but fall in love with his jaw-dropping statement gowns & fur hats, dramatic eveningwear, even his runway decor with stunning chandeliers & white fabric seating was a dream- nothing was subtle about his runway and that’s the way I love it, glamour galore! How could you not give him a standing ovation! Speaking of russian glamour, put Oscar de la Renta together with John Galliano and you had a brilliant runway proving that even the most opposite of personalities can do wonders! And how could it not, Oscar is the king of uptown style and Galliano the prince of romantic glamour – a magical match made in fashion heaven – which we saw on the runway with Oscar’s signature opulent gowns, his evening wear that had a feel of Czarian luxury yet prominent of Galliano’s touch.

What I also loved most about NYFW it was all about breaking the rules – Sequinned shorts at Rachel Zoe, knit sweaters on top of gowns at Jenny Packham, hoodie gowns at Carolina Herrera, and who said you couldn’t do camoflauge and be glamorous – Trust Michael Kors to make camoflauge print look elegant with his camo fur vests & coats that I know are going to be THE fur coats you’d want to own come fall! And Anna Sui showed us that quilted metallics aren’t just for Chanel bags. Cushnie et Ochs proved you could have super sex appeal yet be elegant with its cut-out dresses, and Zac Posen made me wish I could go back in time and live in the 50s with his off-shoulder bustier gowns if only I had the breasts for it (sigh)….My number one show though? Donna Karan! What wasn’t perfect about her collection! Her incredible slashed dresses, flattering silhouettes, the super feminine, super cool, chic, elegant, beautiful, sexy, glamorous – all in one outfits, yes, her ability to mix all that in one collection, that ‘wow’ factor – made her my number one show at NYFW!

Now as all eyes turn to London, I cant wait until its time for my favourite two fashion weeks of all – Milan & Paris…Happy Fashion Weeking!
