A CALL FOR DIVERSITY, BLACK MIRROR PROJECT

Anything you can do, I can do if not better and here’s the proof!

While at the supermarket looking for inspiration through magazines pages, African model Deddeh Howard, realized there weren’t any girls representing her. This came as no surprise, as she has been turned down countless times by modeling agencies. The reason? “they already had one or two black models”. After being sick of feeling sorry for herself, she shared her frustration with photographer boyfriend Raffael Dickreuter and he simply told her: If anyone can do what these girls are doing it’s you!”

The model decided to take matters into her own hands and schooled the world with a positive and inspiring message about race. With the help of her boyfriend she came up with the “Black Mirror” project by  recreating ad campaigns from Guess to Dolce Gabbana channeling supermodels like Gisele Bundchen, Kate Moss and Gigi Hadid. With that, the Liberian model showed that diversity matters.

Deddeh has found a powerful way to highlight the lack of diversity in the industry and hopes the “Black Mirror” project will give equal visibility for all races white, black, asian and latinos. She thinks it’s the perfect way to show any girl of any race that they can do anything they want, and those photographs will help them believe in their potential.
